Religion and Spirituality

While it is all in all a very secular society, New Washington is host to a large number of religions, some of which North America had not seen the likes of in quite some time.

Christianity is still one of the most common religions in New Washington, though it is more or less neck and neck with Etherism and the Pagan Faiths. All monotheistic religions (except Etherism) reduced in popularity significantly after the Snowfall, but the Christian faiths have still maintained a surprising amount of clout. In New Washington, Roman Catholicism, Protestantism and the Baptist faith are the most popular forms of Christianity.

Etherism is a monotheistic religion very similar to Christianity, but believes that magic is a great gift from God and should be used and celebrated. Etherites believe that there is a single source of magic somewhere, and they believe that one day it shall be revealed to the populace. The most important facet of Etherism, however, is the concept that adversity is a gift from God. Etherites believe that the Snowfall was a challenge to the sentient races, and that all such challenges serve to improve those they are leveled against.

The Pagan Faiths are much more prevalent in New Washington than they ever were in America before. The return of the faeries and elves, few of whom ever aligned themselves with any monotheistic religion, signified the resurgence of these religions, as did the stunning increase in power that related magics held.

Animism has grown in popularity due to its relevance in modern magical practices. The worship of spirits and animals has innumerable incarnations in the city and each practitioner generally chooses a unique way to celebrate this.

Kiall'Nyollo is more of an 'umbrella religion' under which other deities and spirits may be worshipped. It is the worship of Ai'Shaa, the goddess who evidently created the Ai'Kiall'Tchall (Pol's Cats). Most practitioners of Kiall'Nyollo are Pol's Cats, but the considerable association of power to righteousness that worship of the cat-goddess can lend has lead to other practitioners adopting the religion as well.

Naturally, many other religions represent themselves in New Washington; Buddhism, Judaism and Islam are still well-represented. There is, of course, a great deal of cult activity in the city as well.
