Huntress (Cheyenne)

Reality: Anim
Race: Leopard
Sex: Female
Age: 4
Occupation: None
Physical Description: Huntress is an Anim leopard, powerfully muscled, sleek, and graceful, with “predator” inscribed in her every move, her every breath, and every glance of her sharp green eyes. Her fur is naturally spotted and colored like a leopard's, but she seldom leaves it that way for long, preferring instead to shift the color of her coat to the tone of her immediate environment as camouflage.
Character Theme: Nature does not nurture.

Biography:

Every once in a while--one among hundreds, or thousands, or more, depending on species--an Anim beast (Anim-al?) grows up sapient. Under normal circumstances, this just means the creature in question becomes a phenomenally intelligent, successful member of its ecosystem. But in a few cases, if the animal lives close enough to civilization, he or she can learn the ways and habits of the two-legged folk and become a functional part of Anim society.

Huntress is an Anim leopard who made that leap, somewhat. A resident of the San Diego Zoo for the first 3 years of her life, Huntress, then called Cheyenne, was the craftiest and most restless of her born-in-captivity litter. Keepers entering her enclosure would be sure she was on the far side of the pen, then startle at finding her suddenly immediately behind, watching. She would look on with an intent, studying gaze anytime the keepers were employing keys, passcodes, or cards to open security doors, and the frequency with which the keepers found such barriers “accidentally left unsecured” was alarming, not to mention unexpected given the staff's diligence. It was as if Cheyenne was saying, I could be gone from this place whenever I pleased, trailing your blood from my claws. Appreciate my mercy.

Then, a month or so after Cheyenne reached maturity, she walked silently up to one of the Mundane keepers, sat back on her haunches, and spoke, plainly if alarmingly: “I demand to be released from this place."

The keeper, taken aback, just gaped. This sort of thing was known to happen, but it took him by surprise, and there were procedures to go through that were utterly escaping him at the moment...

"Release me now or I drape your entrails from the trees,” said Cheyenne, just as coolly as before. She found herself on the streets of San Diego a few minutes later.

From there, Cheyenne set about exploring her new world. She fed herself expertly on whatever prey creatures she could find, mostly of Anim reality, without much regard for where they came from; several farmers and ranchers were much vexed by her predations. But she began making her way east in search of more interesting game, and briefly encountered the odd 99 Lives during his own long hike. She trailed him unnoticed for the whole journey, and found herself in New Valhalla. After feasting on a few of the more exotic creatures she found in NV's alleys, and spending some days prowling to learn the lay of the place, she sidled into Club Chakat and introduced herself to Nine. He in turn, amused by her story of following him, got her acquainted with Kel and the others, and Cheyenne became a regular member of their circle. When they “incorporated” into the Twelve Green Eyes, the others named her “Huntress” for her habits.

Miscellaneous biographical details

When Cheyenne was born, it looked like she was to be a panther, but the extra pigment faded away within her first week. As it turns out, Huntress possesses a minor Anim power: her fur can shift color to help her blend into her surroundings. She has learned how to turn the ability on and off at will, and uses it to great effect in her hunting.

Huntress already has some enemies in New Valhalla. Unbeknownst to her, one of her early meals in the city was the right-hand man of Packrat, leader of the Ratskulls street gang. He has sworn deadly vengeance on her, if he can ever manage to find her.
