99 Lives

Reality: Toon
Race: Anthrocat
Sex: Male
Age: Unknown/Eternal
Occupation: None
Physical Description: 99 Lives is a picture-perfect Tooncat (and rightly so, given his background in the cartoon business): a black cat half the size of a human, with large white paws, a face with a white muzzle, pink nose, and oversized green eyes, and a long blunt-tipped tail with a dab of white at the end. He can walk upright or on four paws.

Biography:

Like all Toons, 99 Lives--or simply “Nine"--says nothing of his earliest origins. His friends in New Valhalla know at least that Nine spent some years in Hollywood; he was the star of “Clawson and Squeeks,” a formulaic cat-vs.-mouse cartoon that, while successful enough to pay off for the network, was less than satisfying to him personally. After a few seasons he began taking over some of the artistic groundwork for the show, until he was both star actor and principal writer for the series, with considerable input into the directing process as well. (The details of this arrangement have not been publicly revealed. Sometimes a Toon just “gets his way.") Under Nine's leadership the show took some strange, even twisted turns, moving from a disconnected episodic format to a continuous, serial story with an incredibly convoluted plot.

While “Clawson's” diehard fan base supported and stuck with the show's new direction, the producers and network execs--a tier of the show's production process Nine had not yet achieved any control over--were not fond of it, and canned the show after a single season of its new-and-improved format. Nine was out of a job.

For a Toon, though, being without a source of income is not much of a crisis. Nine took the opportunity to travel the world, on foot, just because. He had reached the continental shelf when he realized that walking the bottom of the Pacific was not as much fun as he had anticipated, and turned back to try his journey overland instead. A few months later, he caught sight of New Valhalla from some distance away, thought it had more character than Hollywood, and decided to stay awhile.

Nine still hasn't bothered to get a job, but once he found Club Chakat, he made it his base of operations for, well, whatever he did end up doing. Making the acquaintance of the local Toons, he met Psi-Cat, who introduced him to Kel, whom Nine got along well with; action of an unusual sort seemed to circulate around him. So Nine stayed close at paw, and eventually became the comic-relief man of the Twelve Green Eyes.
