Vitality
Vitality represents a character's strength of soul and presence among the living. It encapsulates a number of important aspects of one's identity, including that intangible quality of defining someone's core being. Vitality is a ghost or projector's body, health levels, and the fuel for using Horrors.
Some basic rules about Vitality:
- Vitality Rating = Permanent Vitality (Dots)
- Vitality Points = Temporary Vitality (Boxes)
- Vitality Points can be naturally regenerated to a maximum of your Vitality Rating in two ways:
- 8 hours of rest regenerates 1 Vitality point.
- A projector regains 1 Vitality Point per hour spent in her own body.
- Vitality Points can rise above Vitality Rating if it is given (or taken) from another spook to you.
- Vitality may be exchanged freely between spooks in the same Crucible within line of sight. For spooks you are not “attuned” to, Vitality may be shared by touch.
- Vitality may be regained by tapping Spite. (See the rules for Spite for more info. Spite may be tapped reflexively in emergency situations.
- 1 Willpower Point may be spent to gain 3 Vitality Points. If your Vitality ever drops to zero or below, Willpower Points are automatically spent to regain Vitality Points reflexively.
- When Vitality & Willpower Points both reach zero, the soul dissipates and the character is gone... most of the time.
Vitality also affects how you are perceived by others.
- Vitality Points 7, you appear like a normal living person.
- Vitality Points >=8, you appear vibrant, appearing more alive than is normally possible.
- Vitality <=6. As your Vitality decreases, you appear more and more injured/dessicated/rotting, and in general appear more and more dead.
Your visibility to other spooks is also sometimes affected by your Vitality.
- Vitality Points >=7. You are “invisible” to Spectres, but attract the attention of weaker ghosts like Blips and Drones. A Spectre will notice you if you specifically take action to attract its attention (i.e. attacking it).
- Vitality Points 5-6. You are visible to all spirits, Spectres and ghosts.
- Vitality Points <=4. Invisible to Drone-class spirits. You are now Spectre-bait.
Willpower
Willpower Rating and Points function the same as Vitality.
- 1 Willpower point may be spent to gain 1 automatic success on a single action. This Willpower expenditure must be declared before making the roll. Only 1 point may be spent per turn in this way. This success cannot be cancelled, even by a Botch. A character cannot Botch a roll when spending willpower in this way. The ST may declare Willpower invalid on certain types of rolls.
- 1 Willpower point may be spent to ignore wound penalties/distractions for one turn per point of Stamina the character possesses.
- Spending 1 point of Willpower regenerates 3 Vitality Points. This action is reflexive and immediate and has no time restrictions. This Vitality may exceed Vitality Rating up to a maximum of 10 Vitality Points.
Regaining Willpower
- 8 hours of uninterrupted rest restores 1 Willpower Point.
- Achieving a particular goal or confidence-boosting action may restore 1 Willpower Point (by ST discretion).
- Acting according to your character's Nature in such a way that they affirm their sense of self will reward 1 Willpower Point.
- Crucibles working as a team despite adversity rewards all members of the Crucible 1 Willpower Point each.
