Mutants

The magically-created race of creatures known as Mutants vary in appearance. Most have eyes that are flooded from pupil to whites with a single color, usually representative of their elemental derivation. Their skin is usually tinted an odd color along the same scheme, and many have distinctive darker spots that vary from mutant to mutant. Their ears are usually shaped oddly, as well, and usually are warped the same way depending on their element. They are otherwise identical to humans.

Mutants are not so much an actual species as they are a variation on humans. Ether scientists have determined that magical radiation, while harmless to humans, has a severe and permanent effect on the human fetus. A human child affected by an elemental radiation will forever carry an affinity for that element, bearing abilities, weaknesses, and physical attributes relating to it. These cases are most common with the heavy-taint magic associated with four-element elven wizardry, but tri-element mutants are not unheard of. Many mutants are sterile, but some are not-- and elemental attributes can be passed down through blood. As of the late AoC, research was still being done on this phenomenon.

Mutants are widely discriminated against in New Washington, and are considered by most to be “second-class citizens". As with half-orcs and morphs, violence against mutants frequently goes unpunished in many neighborhoods. The Commercial District and Mercenary District seem to feature the smallest incidence of mutant discrimination.
