Hero Dolls, simply put. Ionian Dolls are the most combat-capable Piano Dolls, and are usually very kind and very human. Many are very dull or stupid, but most grow fast and will often be the most favored of a Puppetmaster's brood. They are the most well-rounded Dolls.
Consonance: Fit In - If a Ionian Doll is interacting one-on-one with a human, he is considered to be at +2 growth for the duration of the interaction. These Dolls may spend a Harmony to reroll a Growth test.
Dissonance: Scars - Ionian Dolls pay a price for their improved humanity; when one is damaged, it keeps the scars from its healed wounds for five times as long as it took the wound itself to heal. An Ionian returning from decapitation will have a choker-shaped scar for a day or two, and one burned to ashes will have fresh, tender-looking skin for a full month.
Aeolian - Piano Legato Adagio
Typically advising Dolls, Aeolians have a pointedly sinister aura about them. Whether or not they are truly evil, Aeolian Dolls are prone to brooding, periods of thought without movement, and very soft words with a great deal of weight behind them. They are exceedingly intelligent, and are not to be trifled with.
Consonance: Library - If an Aeolian Doll can find a nearly-silent place to sit and think, he can gain up to three more dots than he has in any Knowledge (even exceeding five!). He can then talk and look around, but when he stands or if there is any noise louder than a low murmur, the Doll's knowledge instantly reverts. Aeolian Dolls may spend a Harmony to reroll any one Knowledge check.
Dissonance: Librarian - Aeolian Dolls find it difficult to concentrate with any kind of extraneous sensory input. If ambient noise, lights, or sensations are too vivid, the Doll is affected adversely. They suffer a +1 difficulty penalty to perform Talents, +2 difficulty to perform Skills, and +3 to tap their Knowledges.
Lydian - Piano Staccato Allegro
Lydian Dolls are typically a bit eccentric, and find very strange ways to hold onto their humanity. They often get attached to things and places, and will find odd habits that can be very disconcerting to their fellow Dolls and their master. Despite this, they are exceedingly quick-witted and very aware of their surroundings. Since they don't typically think in a linear fashion, they can solve problems that stump other Dolls.
Consonance: Quick Eye - Lydian Dolls cannot botch Alertness or Awareness rolls, and can spend a Harmony to retry any such roll once. A Lydian Doll may also use Awareness rolls (even if they do not have points in the stat) to tell approximately how long they have before danger approaches.
Dissonance: Precious - Lydian Dolls are neurotic. They have a favorite “thing” they must have with them all of the time, or a special “place” that they must visit once a day. If they are away from the “place” for a full day or away from the “thing” for a full hour, they become highly distressed, taking on a cumulative penalty of -1 die on every action for each day thereafter. They may find a new object or place, but before they can receive the benefit of its comfort, they must spend a full, uninterrupted 24 hours fixated on it.
Forte Dolls
Mixolydian - Forte Legato Adagio
Typically the most overtly social Dolls. Mixolydians grow very quickly, and are apt to develop social skills. They can be decent fighters, if trained, but typically favor parlaying when possible. They are not actually as human or compassionate as Ionian Dolls, but are generally more socially capable. In addition, they are apt at skills.
Consonance: Moonlighting - Mixolydian Dolls are apt with skills. By spending a point of Harmony, a Mixolydian Doll may gain a point in any Skill for an hour. The Doll may spend more Harmony to gain other skills, but cannot take more than one extra dot in any skill. Doll skills may exceed five in this situation.
Dissonance: Deadly Serious - A Mixolydian Doll cannot laugh, nor can it fake laughing, no matter what level of growth it has achieved.
Dorian - Forte Legato Allegro
Dorian Dolls are the most common warrior dolls. Generally a little low on brain power and exceedingly strong, Dorian Dolls are generally the fighters of choice. Although some have been known to be prudent, most are perfectly happy with throwing themselves into potentially disastrous situations.
Consonance: Bollicks - Dorian Dolls may spend Harmony on a one-for-one basis to decrease the difficulty on any single combat roll, but cannot decrease it below 4.
Dissonance: Hey You - Dorian Dolls will not harm anyone who is unaware of their presence. They must get the attention of a target before they attack it.
Phrygian - Forte Staccato Allegro
Phrygian Dolls are typically very physically capable, but are not typically as brashly overt as Dorian Dolls. They favor strategy and technique over brute force and bravado, and will generally think things through before leaping into action. As most Forte Dolls, however, they will leap into action at some point. Some regard Phrygian Dolls as the most 'impressive' of the combat dolls, as most seem to have a flair in fighting and exude power.
Consonance: Braggadocio - By spending a Harmony point, Phrygian Dolls may use an 'aggressive' ability such as Intimidation, Melee, Brawl, or Firearms to substitute for any ability used in social defense.
Dissonance: Weapon of Choice - Phrygian Dolls are choosy about their combat styles. A Phrygian Doll chooses one of the following: Brawl, Martial Arts, Melee, Dodge, Firearms. They can then achieve any mastery in that ability as they would like, but cannot learn the others at all! If the Doll reaches five dots in his chosen ability, he may take one dot in each of the others, but no greater than that.
Locrian Dolls:
Locrian Pianissimo - Piano Staccato Adagio
Locrian Pianissimo Dolls feel the soft raindrops of madness upon them. All Locrian Dolls are at least a bit mad, but Pianissimos hide it, allowing it to blossom inside them and watching it as it does. Locrian Pianissimo Dolls are especially difficult to control because their greatest thrill is to disrupt well-laid plans and watch them collapse. Nothing fills them with glee more than this simple pleasure.
Consonance: Monkey Wrench - Locrian Pianissimo Dolls excel at ruining social structures. By succeeding at a Perception + Intuition or a Perception + Empathy roll, the storyteller will tell the Doll what the weak points in the social structure are and how to exploit them. By spending a Harmony point, the Doll will actually erode at the structure subconsciously, planting supernatural seeds of doubt in the targets. The Doll will roll Manipulation + Subterfuge against the target's willpower, and each success will create a seed of doubt planted by the storyteller.
Dissonance: Best Laid Plans - Not only can Locrian Pianissimo Dolls not follow a laid-out plan, they seek such plans out actively to destroy them. These Dolls will obey direct orders, and cannot go directly against their masters, but cannot find it in themselves to see an organized course of action without disrupting it, and must spend a Willpower point to overcome their desire to do so.
Locrian Fortissimo - Forte Staccato Adagio
Locrian Fortissimo Dolls are not as insidious as their Pianissimo brethren, but are far more dangerous. Most are exceedingly violent, and take pleasure in unneccessary death. Many would turn on their masters if they had the chance, but cunning masters can keep such a Doll happy very easily, and achieve a great deal at the same time.
Consonance: It Hurts - By spending a Harmony point, a Locrian Fortissimo Doll can add an automatic success to any damage roll.
Dissonance: Little-Deaths - Locrian Fortissimo Dolls are addicted to killing. They achieve the equivalent of orgasm whenever they kill, and will go as far out of their way as they must to slaughter whomever they can. Those who have killed in the last week must succeed at a Willpower roll, difficulty 8, to leave a victim alive.
