The Shadowflame Organization

The Shadowflame Organization was founded in 2008 by the legendary hero Alec Gainsborough as a substitute to the existing police forces. At the time, the Shadowflames took contracts from civilian organizations to provide protection more effective and creative than the defunct police forces of the time were capable of.

By the time police forces were privatized in 2035, the Shadowflame Organization was recognized as the most reputable and trustworthy source of hired help that could be found in the US. When the coastlines rose, tSfO moved with them and was one of the first supporting companies to help establish New Washington when it was established in 2063.

Once the society of New Washington had been solidified, the Shadowflame Organization split its clout; the effective nature of its mercenary networking was moved into a subsidiary organization and renamed MercNet. MercNet remains the most useful and reliable mercenary organization in New Washington as of 2226, organizing the hordes of independent contractors in the city and allowing them to effectively network and establish working procedures. Any mercenaries working today almost assuredly do so through MercNet, or face far more obstacles in their career than those who take advantage of the services.

The Shadowflame Organization itself found the need to take on a new role. Its survival during the post-snowfall world had created a veritable book of legends concerning the tenacious company, and it had achieved a status far larger-than-life than Gainsborough had intended when he founded it. The role of tSfO had changed drastically. The citizens of New Washington looked to the Shadowflame Organization as a source of stories and legends, not merely of effective work. Moreover, the mercenary trade had become a fairly self-sufficient one; most mercenaries worked alone or in teams and operated through MercNet's wide library of services. The Shadowflame Organization, as it used to be, was no longer necessary. An evolution was in order.

Today's Shadowflame Organization is a portfolio of celebrity mercenaries, hired couriers, killers, diplomats and adventurers who are as flashy as they are effective. While a highly-rated MercNet agent will get a job done, an agent of Shadowflame will get it done and make the news while doing so. Shadowflame agents, known colloquially as Shadowflames, have a stunningly low failure rate concerning their contracts and are much like 20th-century depictions of superheroes, often exhibiting unusal powers or fighting styles to complete their work. Most are fighters, but some Shadowflames are available for jobs completely unrelated to combat. Whatever the case, all of them are media-minded and very capable.

There are three classes of Shadowflames: Agent, Team and Elite.

Agents are as basic a class of mercenary as Shadowflames come, which many say means that they are the best of the best rather than the best of the best of the best. Most Shadowflames begin at Agent level and work their way up. All Agents are submitted to a rigorous application and testing process that is kept highly confidential. Their contracts are handled usually by the Organization itself, and are carefully chosen to ensure maximum effectiveness and image building. Most Agents have already chosen their “theme” or identity, and all have codenames reflecting this choice.

Shadowflame Teams are a more potent form of enforcement and task management. Many are themed, tying their talents and abilities together in a presentational fashion that would look good on the Ether while still maintaining a great deal of effectiveness. Most Shadowflames on a Team do not strive for Elite Status; being on a Team is quite prestigious and it is considered bad form to actively move toward breaking a Team up. There have been a few exceptions, of course.

The Shadowflame Elites are the most powerful and feared mercenaries on the planet. Stylish and deadly, only the Legends of Varius themselves can stand up to an Elite. While many live their lives without mastering magic or using technomagical Augmentations, any Elite is easily a match for several Guardian police and can stand up to lesser dragons without flinching. The Shadowflame Elites are the operatives that gained the organization its reputation.
