Resources of New Washington

Water is an abundant resource in New Washington and its processing is handled almost exclusively through magical means. Elven Magic has had techniques for purifying water for centuries, and relatively simple and low-upkeep spells provide a very inexpensive system for purifying large quantities of water in a very short time. These techniques can extract the salt and impurities from sea water without much trouble, making both sea salt and pure water very easy to obtain for a coastal city such as New Washington.

Fossil Fuels are used considerably less than they were in the past, which is fortunate; such fuels are very rare and difficult to obtain now. Gas is not a basic utility in New Washington and must be specially purchased; there are indeed very few devices that require it. Most cooking ranges are powered through technomagical elemental matrices, portable devices use fuel cells usually made from bio-diesel or ethyl fuels.
Consumer vehicles are all electric-powered via a hyper-efficient battery that can be charged at power stations. These batteries are made through technomagical developments and are somewhat volatile, unfortunately; cars until the late Age of Corporations were occasionally prone to spectacular explosions if damaged in a certain way and could be easily rigged to 'carbombs' by someone who knows their systems. Car accidents, fortunately, rarely caused such damage.

Electric power is a more available and inexpensive resource than it has ever been. Technomagical methods of power harnessing have revolutionized the process of power use worldwide, and New Washington is at the forefront of these techniques.

Most of New Washington's electric power is gained through a process known as Node Tapping, a technique developed through the collaboration of Technomancer and Node Caller scientists. The same elemental eco-nodes used to give Node Callers their fearsome power can now be tapped toward power-harnessing purposes through elemental-charged generators to provide inexpensive, nearly self-sustaining power. Node Tapping drains considerably less elemental energy from nodes and can transfer power up to three hundred miles away. The Federal Government of New Washington jealously guards the locations of their Node Generators and keeps them as confidential as they can manage.
Another innovation at the forefront of which New Washington runs is that of wireless electric power. The entirety of the city has been converted to the wireless power system, with “Charge Fields” installed in property and some public spaces. Some representatives have objected to the conversion to Charge Fields, as it allows power monitoring representatives to catalogue all power-drawing devices operating in the field's range and cut off their power at will, but contracts and privacy agreements have largely obviated these complaints.
Very large draws of power, such as the process of charging a car's battery, still require cables to run properly, but this is seldom an issue for the average consumer; power stations for cars and for some industrial machinery are abundant and relatively inexpensive.

Food is the scarcest and most difficult-to-obtain resource in New Washington. There is no arable land near the city, and therefore all produce and meat must be imported. Luckily, there is a great deal of both available in the Great Western Forest, but it is a dangerous area to farm. As such, New Washington meat and produce can be somewhat expensive. Fish is by far the most affordable commodity, as the waters surrounding the city are relatively free of pollution. In addition, the civilization of New Atlantis has a very strong relationship with New Washington, and their trade has made fish a rather inexpensive commodity. In addition, a number of seaweeds are a very basic trade. Combined with the rice fields that have been established on the west coast of New Washington, Japanese-style cuisine has seen a sharp rise in popularity in New Washington culture.
