I spent about an hour during a CS lecture putting my left hand in different positions and sketching the skeleton... it was incredibly productive. I got an equation out of it, too. In case you're curious, it says:
proportions: d = 2/3 (c = 2/3 (b = 1/2 (a = w)))
Where w is the wrist width and a, b, c, and d are the four bone lengths.
